40's Vintage Kuba palm wine cup from Congo
【Brand】Vintage
【Model】 Kuba palm wine cup
【Condition】USED
【Description】
A traditional palm wine cup made by the Kuba people living in Africa, dating back to around the 1940s.
A highly primitive form, a wooden cup carved from a single piece of wood, reinforced and decorated with metal plates and studs. The zigzag metal reinforcement running around the body is a detail that serves both the practical purpose of preventing cracks and the tribal decorative patterns. The surface has developed deep color variations and luster from years of use and smoking, exuding an overwhelming aura unique to folk implements.
Originally, it was a vessel used for both ritual and daily purposes to drink palm wine (coconut wine) and fermented alcoholic beverages. It is not merely a vessel, but a folk craft condensed with tribal culture, life, and beliefs.
There are age-related changes such as repairs to cracks, cracks in the wood, and oxidation of the metal, but it is in a condition that does not interfere with use. It has a strong presence as an art object and is sure to appeal to lovers of vintage, folk art, and primitive art.
