[Product Description]

A figural cup in the form of a human figure by the Kuba people, who possessed a sophisticated wood carving culture that flourished in central Africa. The head itself forms the drinking vessel, and the body and legs are carved from a single piece of wood, resulting in a highly refined sculpture.

The geometric patterns around the head, the exaggerated ears, the serene expression, and the powerful balance of the legs strongly exhibit the characteristic aesthetic beauty of Kuba sculpture. The surface shows a luster and wear from years of use and ritualistic handling, as well as some partial color loss, giving it the imposing presence of a "living folk art" rather than a mere craft.

It is said to have originally been used for drinking palm wine or fermented liquor, or as a vessel related to kingship or ancestral spirit rituals, positioning it between a practical item and a ritual object. The composition of the human figure supporting the drink is also interpreted as a symbol of "ancestors bestowing the water of life."

There are signs of use inside and scratches and minor damage from age on the exterior, but there is no structural damage, and the three-dimensional form is well-preserved. This piece is a very striking addition to any collection of primitive art, African art, or folk art.
