[Product Description]
Silver bangle made by Navajo artist Leiadakai.
Born in Gallup, New Mexico, Lei Adakai learned engraving from his father, a renowned master craftsman. He is one of the veteran Navajo artists. He specializes in thick, three-dimensional stamp work and designs.
He is a skilled artisan himself, making all of his tools by hand and living the traditional Navajo lifestyle. His work is stamped all the way to the back, and he is a highly popular artist with a unique worldview that exudes a soft sensibility within a rugged look.
This piece is made using spiny oyster shells. Characterized by their soft orange color, spiny oyster shells are found in the Gulf of Mexico, far from the Navajo Reservation. They were brought to Japan by the Spanish for trade, along with casting and engraving techniques, and are a traditional material often used in Native American jewelry, along with turquoise and coral.
This is a very high quality piece, featuring a soft-looking spiny oyster shell with powerful stamp work.
