This American antique black doll is believed to have been made in the 1920s or earlier.

It's a folk art piece with a completely handmade cloth body, an endearing embroidered face, three-dimensionally sewn ears, and hickory stripe overalls reflecting the farmer and workwear styles of the era.

The straw hat is an original, hand-braided piece from the period, the pants have patch repairs, and "SAMB" is hand-written on one side. It's a warm, handcrafted item that clearly wasn't mass-produced but rather made individually in a home or small workshop.

Black dolls from before the 1920s are extremely rare. In recent years, they have been re-evaluated in the fields of "Black Americana," "Folk Art," and "Outsider Art," and their value as collector's items has surged worldwide.
